It’s National Moving Month! May kicks off the busiest moving season of the year. Over the next several months, college students are moving away to college or coming home. And countless others use this month to pack up and relocate. Another reason it’s such a popular month to move is the weather is better.

The U.S. Censor Bureau reports that one in nine people move each year. If you’re one of those nine who is planning to relocate this summer, here are some of the most common questions and answers about moving.

How much will it cost to move?

Moving costs depend on many factors. Distance, the weight of items, and additional services you require, such as packing and unpacking, are just a portion of what factors into the cost of moving. We recommend that you get several quotes.

How soon should I book a mover?

In general, we recommend scheduling about four to six weeks in advance. However, during the busy season, movers book quickly. Call as soon as possible to get the date you need with the company you want.

What if I can’t move into my new house before I move out?

Hopefully, you won’t run into this problem. But in case you do, be prepared and plan. Some moving companies have storage solutions. Ask the moving company you choose if they offer this service.

Where do I begin with packing?

Begin packing as early as you can. When you live in a home for several years, you forget how much you’ve accumulated. Declutter and donate as much as you can. Many moving services calculate costs based on the total weight of your items. If you get rid of what you don’t want or need, you’ll avoid overspending to transport items you’ll likely throw away at your destination. Then, begin packing winter items and anything you won’t need right away. Here’s a timeline to help you prepare and a moving checklist to keep you organized.

Is there anything I shouldn’t pack?

Yes! We recommend that you transport valuable or irreplaceable items in your personal vehicle rather than the moving truck. These items include,

  • Cash
  • Family Photos
  • Valuable Collections
  • Deeds
  • Wills
  • Jewelry
  • Important Documents (including moving contracts)
  • And More!

Also, there are some items that movers can’t move, such as

  • Explosives
  • Compressed Gasses
  • Flammable Liquids and Solids
  • Oxidizers
  • Poisons
  • Corrosives
  • And More

If you aren’t sure if something is movable, ask the movers. They should be able to answer these questions and help you through the moving process.
