The promise of moving away to college is exciting and adventurous. The process of moving, however, can be a challenge. Here are some college moving tips to make things easier for you and your parents.

Check the Paperwork

Reread everything related to housing. Pay particular attention to check-in times, locations, and procedures for move-in day.

Coordinate with Your Roommate

Make a plan to meet your roommate before arriving if possible. Arrange to be on campus at the same time so you can discuss the room set-up.

Consider Renting a Dolly

If your dorm room is on an upper floor with no elevator, you might want to consider bringing or renting a dolly. Some residence halls will have one so call ahead and ask.

Use Moving Boxes

Moving boxes are much easier to pack and transport rather than trash bags and grocery sacks. Plus, boxes are much easier to carry up multiple flights of crowded dorm room stairs.

If you’ll be using under-bed storage boxes to hold spare towels and bed linens, pack those items in the bins before you load up. The bin goes straight from the car to underneath the bed—no unpacking necessary.

Note: Many dorms don’t have elevators, and those that do are crammed too.

Here’s a guide to choosing the right moving boxes.

Move-In Early

If there’s any way to move in early, do it! It’ll be much easier to move without the hordes of people doing it at the same time as you.

Pack Tools and First-Aid Supplies

A toolkit with a basic hammer, screwdrivers, and pliers are super handy on move-in day. You may need to lower bunk beds, raise or lower mattresses, or deal with minor repairs. Duct tape, zip ties, and cable ties are handy as well.

Take a basic first-aid kit. At a minimum, it should contain disinfectant wipes or spray, bandages, sports tape, and an over-the-counter pain killer.

Ship Items or Buy Them When You Get There

If you’re not taking a car, or moving across the country, you can ship your belongings to the school. Also, consider ordering or purchasing items you need once you arrive to avoid transporting them.

Hire a Moving Company

Hiring a moving company that helps college students move in and out can save you a ton of hassle and headache. All you have to do is sit back and relax.
