You have a lot to do on your list after moving into a new home. While meeting your neighbors might not be at the top of that list, it will help you feel more settled in your new home and neighborhood. Not sure how to do that? Here are some simple tips to help you get started.

1. Smile and Say Hello

Moving day can be a busy and hectic time. However, if your neighbors are outside during the process, take time to smile and say hello to them while moving into your new home. The point is to establish a foundation for a warm, pleasant relationship and a genuine greeting is an excellent way to start.

2. Don’t Be Shy, Introduce Yourself

It sounds simple, but making the first move and knocking on your neighbors’ door to introduce yourself will make a positive impression. Be sure to avoid dinner, breakfast, or early mornings, or when they are getting in or out of their car. Your neighbors will appreciate your courtesy and likely have questions for you, which brings us to the next tip.

3. Ask Questions

Be engaged and take a genuine interest. Ask questions about the area. Most people will appreciate the chance to share what they know about the neighborhood or local life. If you feel comfortable, ask them about their family or interests.

4. Spend Time Outside

You’ll never meet anyone cooped up inside. Go for a walk in the neighborhood, spend time in the front yard, or hang out in common neighborhood areas such as the park or pool area if it applies. The more people you come into contact with, the greater chance you’ll have of sparking new relationships.

5. Host a Housewarming Party

Throw a housewarming party and invite the neighbors. It will make them more inclined to welcome you into their lives and homes if you ask them first. It can be as simple as inviting them over for drinks and finger snacks or coffee and dessert.
